counselor supervision
Felix Murad, LPC-Supervisor (TX)
You just conquered the final boss of graduate school – countless papers written, practicum hours logged, and that hard-earned degree finally in hand! Congratulations! But now the next level begins: navigating the quest to find a supervision site and a supervisor who gets it, right here in Texas. If the thought of that feels like another marathon study session, take a deep breath.
I'm an LPC Supervisor in Texas, and I understand you've just put in the hard yards. My supervision approach is designed to take the "hard part" out of this next stage, offering a supportive and engaging environment where you can genuinely learn and self-actualize as a multiculturally competent professional counselor. I'm passionate about helping new therapists like you thrive!
My supervision approach is grounded in developmental levels, meaning we'll tailor our work together to meet you where you are in your growth as a counselor. My supervision philosophy is deeply rooted in person-centered principles. Our supervisory relationship will be built on trust, empathy, and genuine regard. You'll find a safe and encouraging space to explore your cases, reflect on your experiences, and develop your unique counseling style – the space where you'll feel genuinely supported.
Recognizing that growth sometimes requires different perspectives, I also embrace the roles of teacher, counselor, and supervisor as needed. Whether seeking guidance on specific techniques, exploring those tricky countertransference moments, or navigating ethical dilemmas that keep you up at night, I'm here to offer instruction, support, and direction to help you build a strong foundation and feel confident in your skills.
A core commitment of my supervision is fostering multicultural competence. I believe it's essential to serve the diverse communities we serve effectively. We will actively explore diversity, equity, and inclusion issues in your clinical work, ensuring you develop the awareness, knowledge, and skills necessary to connect authentically and ethically with all your clients.
As your supervisor, I am dedicated to helping you:
Confidently understand and apply counseling theories in real-world practice.
Develop strong, practical clinical skills and effective techniques you can use immediately.
Navigate the often-complex ethical and legal considerations with clarity and integrity.
Enhance your self-awareness, understand your reactions, and effectively manage countertransference.
Cultivate a strong and authentic professional identity as your kind of counselor.
Grow in your multicultural competence and sensitivity, becoming a genuinely inclusive therapist.
Prepare for your LPC licensure in Texas with a sense of readiness and accomplishment.
If you are a motivated and growth-oriented LPC Associate in Texas looking for supervision that is both supportive and challenging – a partnership that will genuinely invest in your development into a multiculturally competent professional counselor – then I encourage you to reach out!
If you are interested in exploring supervision services with me, please submit a request for a 30-minute Zoom consultation. This is a chance for us to connect, for me to learn about your goals, and for you to interview me to ensure we are both an excellent fit for this important stage of your career. Please come prepared to ask questions about accruing your required hours, my specific supervision expectations, and my experience as a supervisor in Texas. Due to the high level of interest of many associates, I will thoughtfully consider our compatibility after our conversation.
To help us both make the most of our consultation, here are some questions I may ask you, and some you might find helpful to consider beforehand:
What specific areas of your counseling practice do you feel most confident in, and where do you see the need for further development or support in your counseling development?
Considering your clients ' unique cultural context, can you describe a recent challenging client interaction and how you approached it?
How do you incorporate client and supervision feedback into your therapeutic approach, and what are your expectations for feedback in our supervisory relationship?
What theoretical frameworks or modalities are you most interested in exploring further during our supervision sessions, and how do you see them applying to the diverse populations in Texas?
How do you envision our supervisory relationship contributing to your professional growth and developing your clinical skills as an LPC in Texas?
Have you submitted your LPC Associate paperwork to the Texas Behavioral Health Executive Council (BHEC)? Please note that I cannot formally begin supervision until the BHEC has approved me as your supervisor. This may not apply if you only schedule an introduction consult for supervision. If you have questions, please email me at fmurad@muradcounseling or call 956-659-2968 and leave a voice message with any questions or requests, or fill out the form below to contact my office.
I look forward to hearing from you and learning more about your incredible journey.
Supervision Pricing
I offer individual and group supervision to accommodate different learning styles and budgets. My rate is $150 per session, and my group rate (with a maximum of 3 associates per group) is $75 per session. A minimum of four monthly supervision sessions is required to ensure consistent progress, regardless of your chosen package. Keeping in mind the official BHEC requirements at the time of this writing. As an LPC Associate in Texas, the "3000 rule" refers to the requirement of completing 3,000 clock hours of supervised experience under a Council-approved supervisor to be eligible for full Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) licensure.
Here's a breakdown of the hours accumulated requirements based on the information from the Texas Behavioral Health Executive Council (TBHEC) and the Texas Administrative Code:
Total Hours: You need to accumulate 3,000 supervised experience hours.
Direct Client Contact: At least 1,500 hours must be spent in direct client counseling. This includes time spent directly counseling individuals, families, couples, or groups—only the actual time spent counseling counts towards this requirement. All other duties of delivering services to your clients are counted as indirect hours, including administrative tasks, readings, trainings, and consultations with other professionals for continuity of care and case coordination. Other activities, such as earning credits towards an MA/PHD that involve psychological or behavioral factors, will be considered indirect hours. If you are unsure, ask, and I will tell you, as will the BHEC site.
Supervision: You must receive direct supervision while counseling for at least four (4) hours per month. This supervision can be individual (up to two Associates) or group (three or more Associates). No more than 50% of your total supervision hours can be in a group setting.
Duration: You cannot complete 3,000 hours of supervised experience in less than 18 months. There is also a maximum timeframe of 60 months from when your LPC Associate license is issued to complete these hours.
Nature of Experience: The experience must primarily involve providing direct counseling services to clients within a professional relationship, using a combination of mental health and human development principles, methods, and techniques.
Supervisors: You can have up to two (2) Council-approved LPC Supervisors at once.
When Hours Count: Supervised experience hours can only be earned after your LPC Associate license has been issued by the BHEC. Any hours obtained before your Associate license will not count towards the 3,000-hour requirement.
Continued Supervision: After completing the 3,000 hours, you must continue to be supervised until you receive your full LPC license. Supervision ends once your LPC license is granted.
Documentation: Your supervisor(s) must complete and submit a Supervised Experience Documentation form to the TBHEC to verify your hours.
In summary, the "3000 rule" is a core component of the Texas LPC licensure process. It emphasizes the importance of substantial supervised clinical experience, with a significant portion dedicated to direct client interaction, guided by regular supervision over a minimum period of 18 months. While I want you to become fully licensed as soon as possible, I do understand people are on their own deadlines, and that is not a problem as long as you have a practical plan or are open to creating one to finish within the 60-month requirement.
